Mangaluru: The School of Engineering at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) celebrated National Science Day 2026 on campus under the theme “Vigyantra – Engineering the Future with Science.” The programme was held at 9.00 a.m. at the L.F. Rasquinha Hall, LCRI Block, bringing together faculty members and students to reflect on the role of science in shaping technological progress.
National Science Day is observed annually to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by Nobel Laureate C. V. Raman, a milestone that significantly advanced the understanding of light scattering and modern spectroscopy.
Emphasising research-oriented thinking
Dr Ronald Nazareth, Registrar of the University, and Dr Asha Abraham, Director of the LCRI Block, were present on the occasion. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr S. Ruban, Dean of the School of Engineering, who highlighted the importance of nurturing research-oriented thinking among students.
He stressed that engineering education must go beyond textbook knowledge and encourage innovation, experimentation and interdisciplinary collaboration to address contemporary societal challenges.
Insights from distinguished speakers
The Chief Guest, Dr Antony Sylvan D’Souza, Dean and Professor of Anatomy at Father Muller Medical College, underscored the significance of scientific inquiry and interdisciplinary innovation. He encouraged students to adopt a problem-solving mindset and to integrate knowledge across disciplines to develop sustainable solutions.
The Guest of Honour, Dr Mohit P. Tahiliani from National Institute of Technology Karnataka, emphasised that consistency and clarity are fundamental to sustained academic and professional success. He urged students to remain focused, disciplined and committed to lifelong learning.
Coordinated student and faculty effort
The event was coordinated by faculty coordinators Dr Geetha Pinto and Mr Tenson Jose, along with student conveners Mr Shashwath Shetty and Mr Mohammed Safaf. The collaborative effort ensured active student participation and smooth execution of the programme.
The celebration concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Geetha M. Pinto, Associate Dean, School of Engineering.
The observance of National Science Day 2026 reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to integrating scientific principles with engineering practice, fostering innovation and preparing students to contribute meaningfully to technological advancement and national development.
