Mangaluru: A group of students from the Department of Social Work, St. Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, has been honoured for displaying exceptional courage, compassion, and presence of mind after rescuing an elderly man who was seriously injured in an accident near the city bus stand.

The incident occurred on June 30, when heavy rainfall caused a large glass panel from a shop opposite the bus stand to shatter and fall on an elderly pedestrian.

Students respond swiftly during emergency

Realising the seriousness of the situation, the students immediately rushed to the injured man and ensured his safety before arranging for his immediate transportation to the nearby KMC Hospital for emergency treatment.

The students who came to the victim’s aid included Justin V. Joy, Tharun Bomick, Alit Mathew, and Ajay Kiran from the Master of Social Work (MSW) programme, along with Kevin, Vyshak, Frenon, and Spandan from the BA Social Work, Economics, and other undergraduate programmes.

Their calm, coordinated, and timely response enabled the victim to receive urgent medical attention without delay, significantly contributing to saving his life.

KMC Hospital recognises humanitarian service

In recognition of their exemplary humanitarian service, KMC Hospital, Mangaluru, felicitated the students with Certificates of Appreciation, acknowledging their prompt action and invaluable contribution during the emergency.

The students’ selfless intervention reflected the core principles of the social work profession by placing humanity above all else and responding with empathy, responsibility, and compassion in a time of crisis.

The Vice Chancellor of St. Aloysius (Deemed to be University) congratulated the students for their remarkable act of kindness and praised their courage, quick thinking, and selfless service.
