Mangaluru: St Aloysius Pre-University College organised a three-day Staff Enrichment Programme ahead of the commencement of the new academic year with the objective of equipping educators with the skills, insights, and perspectives required to address the evolving demands of contemporary education.
The programme was centred on the theme of holistic education, professional growth, mentorship, emotional wellbeing, and the integration of modern teaching practices.
Focus on Ignatian spirituality and Jesuit education
The programme commenced with a session by Rev. Fr Fredrick D’Silva SJ on “Ignatian Spirituality as the Basis for Jesuit Education.”
He explained how St Ignatius envisioned education as a means of transforming society through the transformation of individuals. Emphasising that every person possesses unique potential, he highlighted the role of Jesuit education in shaping compassionate, socially responsible individuals committed to serving others and contributing meaningfully to society.
Understanding and mentoring Gen Alpha learners
Rev. Fr Henry Saldanha SJ, Superior of Asha Kiran, conducted a session on mentoring Gen Alpha learners.
He discussed the challenges faced by the present generation, describing them as digitally connected but socially disconnected and emotionally vulnerable. He elaborated on concerns such as compulsiveness, poor coping mechanisms, and lack of emotional resilience, while guiding teachers on identifying warning signs and supporting students through empathy and mentorship.
AI integration in modern teaching
Dr Ruban S, Dean of the School of Engineering at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), addressed the staff on “Integration of AI Tools in Modern Teaching Techniques.”
He explained how artificial intelligence tools can enhance classroom interaction, reduce clerical workload, and improve teaching efficiency. He also demonstrated several freely available AI tools useful for educators and cautioned staff about cyber fraud, privacy concerns, and the misuse of personal data in the digital era.
Sessions on team building and conflict management
Interactive sessions on team building and conflict management were conducted by Ms Shavina Soans and Mr Sudhesh Bangera respectively.
Ms Shavina Soans, Soft Skills Trainer at ICAI Mangalore, engaged participants through interactive activities focused on classroom engagement and understanding diverse learners. She encouraged teachers to approach students with empathy and foster a supportive learning environment.
Mr Sudhesh Bangera, Soft Skills and Corporate Trainer and Entrepreneur, conducted a session titled “From Differences to Direction,” focusing on conflict management.
He explained the triggers and root causes of conflict using the 4-P Framework and introduced practical strategies such as the SAY Renegotiation Tool to promote healthy communication and effective boundary-setting. He also encouraged participants to reflect on personal and professional growth while dealing with conflict situations.
Special orientation for probationary staff
A dedicated session for probationary staff was conducted by Campus Minister Rev. Fr Anthony Derrick on Jesuit education and values.
Through reflective activities and interactive discussions, he highlighted Jesuit ideals such as Magis and the formation of conscience, encouraging educators to nurture morally grounded, compassionate, and responsible students.
Programme rejuvenates staff ahead of academic year
The three-day Staff Enrichment Programme concluded on an inspiring note, rejuvenating the teaching staff and preparing them to begin the academic year with renewed enthusiasm, commitment, and a deeper understanding of the evolving educational landscape.
