From April 1, 2025, Australia has revised its visa fees, increasing costs by up to 13% across multiple categories. This decision significantly affects Indian nationals planning to pursue education, seek employment, or travel to the country. The Student Visa (subclass 500) now demands AUD 1,808 (approx. ₹96,800), a jump from AUD 1,600 (₹85,600). Likewise, a tourist visa will now cost AUD 169.50 (₹9,070), up from AUD 150, while work visa charges have climbed to AUD 1,130 (₹60,490) from the earlier AUD 1,000.
Earlier in February 2025, the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) also underwent a fee hike.
– Main applicant fee: AUD 2,235 (previously AUD 1,945)
– Additional applicant (18+ years): AUD 1,115
– Below 18 years: AUD 560
– Second Post-Higher Education Work stream: AUD 880
According to the Department of Home Affairs, the price revision reflects rising administrative expenses and inflationary trends.
In addition to visa changes, university tuition fees have also seen a surge.
– Engineering at University of Melbourne: AUD 56,480/year
– Medical courses: AUD 112,832/year
– Fee hikes at UNSW and others: Up to 7%
The July 2024 student visa fee hike—from AUD 710 to AUD 1,600—had already stirred backlash. Education Minister Jason Clare defended the move, citing investments in student support and reducing graduate debt.
However, experts like Saurabh Arora of University Living believe the rising costs may push students to explore non-traditional countries for overseas education.
