Mangaluru: A ten-day Tiatr workshop was formally inaugurated at 3 p.m. on February 5 at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), marking a significant initiative to promote Konkani theatre and performance traditions among students.

The workshop was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Melwin D’Cunha SJ, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University. Addressing the participants, he extended his best wishes for the forthcoming ten days and encouraged students to make the most of the opportunity by engaging wholeheartedly in the learning process. He highlighted the value of theatre as a medium for self-expression, discipline, and creative growth, urging participants to use the workshop period in a fruitful and meaningful manner.

Theatre as relaxation and passion

Mr. Satish Narvekar from the Department of Art and Culture served as the Guest of Honour for the inaugural programme. In his address, he spoke about the importance of theatre as a form of relaxation and emotional release in today’s fast-paced life. He advised students to enjoy theatre through active participation and performance, stressing that passion for the arts should not clash with professional aspirations. According to him, theatre can coexist with one’s career and enrich personal and professional life alike.

Academic and cultural significance of Tiatr

Sharing the dais was Mr. Christopher D’Souza, Director of the Ranga Adhyayana Kendra of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University). He emphasised the role of structured theatre training in nurturing talent and preserving regional performance traditions.
