Times NIE teachers’ meet focuses on AI education for future skills

Kolkata: The Times NIE Teachers’ Meet, held on November 22 in collaboration with RCC Institute of Information Technology (RCCIIT), brought together over 150 educators from across the city. The event’s theme, AI Capacity Building Program for Schools: Empowering Students with Future Skills, was part of a broader initiative by RCCIIT, funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.

The initiative aims to introduce AI education at the school level, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) and MeitY recommendations. Through this project, educators and students from classes VIII to XII will be equipped with foundational AI skills via workshops, boot camps, projects, and hackathons. Anirban Mukherjee, Principal of RCCIIT, emphasized the importance of training teachers and offering an industry-designed curriculum to prepare students for the AI-driven future.

Prof. Amlan Chakraborty, Director of A.K. Choudhury School of Information Technology at the University of Calcutta, delivered the keynote address, stressing the importance of early awareness about responsible AI use. Tulika Pandey, Group Coordinator at MeitY, applauded RCCIIT’s initiative, aligning it with India’s vision of AI for All, and highlighted the significance of integrating AI education in schools to foster ethical and responsible innovators.

The event also featured a panel discussion on the necessity of AI education in schools, with contributions from Arup Chatterjee (ex-director, NIELIT), Chandan Maity (Headmaster, Krishnachandrapur High School), and Moitreyee Mukherjee (Principal, Army Public School, Barrackpore). The meet concluded with valuable insights, empowering educators to shape a future-ready, AI-aware generation.
