In a proactive move, the Tamil Nadu government has urged arts and science colleges to motivate students pursuing basic sciences to apply for summer internships at India’s premier research institutes. This initiative aims to offer budding scientists broader exposure to advanced research environments.
A circular issued by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education highlights opportunities at leading institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru; Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Hyderabad; and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai. These summer programmes, mostly residential, are affordable and accessible to students from all socio-economic backgrounds.
Additionally, the circular includes a list of 33 top-tier research organizations like ISRO, Institute of Mathematical Sciences (Chennai), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Bhopal and Kolkata, Indian Institute of Astrophysics (Bengaluru), IITs, and National Laboratories in Pune. Colleges have been directed to prominently display this information to encourage maximum participation.
“These internships provide invaluable hands-on experience in cutting-edge research and allow students to collaborate with top scientists across disciplines,” noted M P Vijayakumar, vice-chairman of TANSCHE. He also assured financial assistance, including travel costs, for selected students if required.
College principals welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its role in inspiring students to pursue excellence. “Interning at places like IISER or IIT can transform a student’s perspective on basic sciences,” said P Murugakoothan, principal of Pachaiyappa’s College.
