Mangaluru: The Yenepoya Institute of Arts, Science, Commerce & Management (YIASCM), a constituent institute of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), inaugurated its Universal Human Values (UHV) Cell on March 23, 2026, at its Kulur Campus, marking a significant step towards promoting value-based education and ethical development among students.
The UHV Cell has been established in accordance with the guidelines of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and is designed to integrate human values into academic and institutional practices.

Justice Santosh Hegde stresses integrity in public life
The UHV Cell was inaugurated by Justice N. Santosh Hegde, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India and former Lokayukta of Karnataka. Addressing the gathering, he highlighted the importance of integrity in governance and public life.
He remarked that integrity is the foundation on which trust is built and emphasised that it is not optional in public life. He further stated that justice must not only be delivered but must also be perceived as fair by the public.
Justice Hegde also called upon citizens to stand firmly against corruption, noting that active public participation is essential for the nation’s progress. His address set the tone for the initiative, underlining the need for ethical responsibility across all sectors of society.
Education must shape character and leadership
Mr. R. Upendra Shetty, Chairman of the Universal Group of Institutions and Guest of Honour, spoke about the transformative role of education in shaping character and purpose. He stated that true leadership lies in empowering individuals and fostering a sense of responsibility.
He added that institutions thrive when their vision aligns with commitment, and emphasised the importance of nurturing ethical values alongside academic excellence.
UHV initiative aligns with institutional vision
Presiding over the function, Dr. Sripathi Rao, Pro Vice Chancellor of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), congratulated YIASCM for emerging as a model among its constituent colleges.
He observed that knowledge becomes meaningful only when it is applied with wisdom, reinforcing the core objectives of the Universal Human Values initiative. He expressed confidence that the UHV Cell would contribute significantly to the overall development of students.
Role of educators in shaping future generations
Prof. Jeevan Raj, Principal (I/C), emphasised the crucial role of educators in moulding future generations. He noted that teachers play a key role not only in imparting knowledge but also in inspiring students to lead meaningful lives.
He highlighted that consistency and discipline are essential drivers of success and encouraged students to cultivate these qualities as part of their personal and professional journeys.
Focus on implementing human values in education
In her introductory remarks, Prof. Shareena P, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management, Vice Principal, and Chairperson of the UHV Cell, outlined the objectives of the initiative.
She stressed the importance of implementing Universal Human Values in alignment with AICTE guidelines and ensuring that students receive education that goes beyond academics to include ethical and moral dimensions.
The UHV Cell aims to create awareness about values such as honesty, empathy, responsibility, and respect, thereby fostering a culture of integrity within the institution.
Participation and programme proceedings
The event witnessed the presence of Mr. Narayan Sukumar A, Vice Principal, heads of departments, faculty members, and students.
Dr. Deekshitha Prashanth, Faculty Coordinator, welcomed the gathering, while Dr. Shalini Sequeira, Convener of the UHV Cell and Head of the Department of Linguistic Studies, proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Ms. Pinakini Shetty, Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce.
