University Bans Political Events at Maharaja College Grounds Amid Cleanup Concerns
Mysuru: The University of Mysore (UoM) has decided to prohibit political conventions at the Maharaja College grounds following public criticism over garbage mismanagement and parking issues. This decision is a direct response to complaints received after recent rallies caused significant inconvenience and littering in the area.
UoM Vice-Chancellor NK Loknath announced that henceforth, the grounds will not be available for political events unless organizers agree to manage waste and parking issues effectively. The decision comes after two major political rallies held on Friday and Saturday—Congress’ Janandolana convention and the BJP and JD(S) Mysuru Chalo event—resulted in widespread littering. Residents reported that leftover food, plastic sachets, and plates were scattered across the grounds and even discarded inside nearby government institute compounds.
Local resident Sanjana expressed frustration, stating that political rallies exacerbate garbage and traffic problems, and called for a ban on such events at the venue. Parashuramegowda, founder-member of Parisara Balaga, criticized both political parties and officials for their handling of the situation, particularly highlighting the misuse of single-use plastics in violation of local bans.
The UoM’s move reflects growing concerns about maintaining cleanliness and order in public spaces during large-scale events.
