Mangaluru: The Father Muller Medical College (FMMC) inaugurated its 27th batch of MBBS students (2025–2026) with a solemn and inspiring White Coat Ceremony on October 11, 2025, symbolising the beginning of a noble journey in medicine and compassionate service. The event was presided over by Rev. Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo, Director, Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI), and graced by Rev. Dr Leo Lasrado as the Chief Guest.
A Meaningful Beginning to the Academic Journey
The ceremony began with a warm welcome by Rev. Dr Michael Santhumayor, Administrator, FMMC, who introduced the Chief Guest, highlighting his academic journey, pastoral service, and leadership. The gathering included faculty, parents, and students, all sharing in the joy and reverence of this significant academic milestone.
The White Coat Ceremony: A Rite of Passage
The White Coat Ceremony, a defining tradition in medical education, marked the formal induction of the new students into the medical profession. Prof. Dr Nagesh K, Head of the Medical Education Unit and a doctor in Forensic Medicine, administered the White Coat Oath in accordance with National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines.
As each student donned the white coat for the first time, pride and emotion filled the auditorium—signifying their commitment to healing, service, and ethics. The Father Muller Institutional Anthem was then sung with enthusiasm, reflecting the unity and legacy of the institution.
Chief Guest’s Address: A Message of Faith and Compassion
In his inspiring address, Rev. Dr Leo Lasrado reflected on his youthful dream of becoming a doctor and his lifelong admiration for the medical vocation. Using a powerful metaphor of “looking in four directions,” he urged students to:
-
Look ahead – to embrace lifelong learning and service;
Look around – to empathise with the suffering and needs of others;
Look back – to appreciate the sacrifices of parents and well-wishers; and
Look up – to seek guidance from the Divine Healer.
He reminded the students that Father Muller Medical College continues the divine mission of healing entrusted by God, not driven by commercial motives. Sharing a touching story of a village doctor, Dr Suji Narayana, Rev. Dr Lasrado highlighted how compassion and a gentle smile can be as healing as medicine itself—emphasising that empathy remains the soul of medical practice.
Launch of the Plastic-Free Campus Initiative
As part of the ceremony, Rev. Fr George Jeevan Sequeira, Administrator, Father Muller Medical College Hospital, launched the “Plastic-Free Campus” initiative by releasing handbills and an awareness video through the Director, FMCI. The initiative seeks to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainability across the campus and affiliated services.
Fr Sequeira encouraged students and campus partners—including food service providers—to adopt eco-friendly alternatives. The awareness video highlighted waste segregation, plastic reduction, and biodegradable replacements, reinforcing FMCI’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
Presidential Address: A Call to Purpose and Faith
In his presidential address, Rev. Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo extended a heartfelt welcome to the new students and their families, describing the medical profession as a divine calling. He urged the students to cultivate not only academic excellence but also humility, compassion, and faith in their professional journey.
He encouraged the parents to accompany their wards with understanding and support, fostering both intellectual and moral growth. “Be discerning, driven, and godly in your pursuit of healing,” he advised the students, reminding them that medicine is as much a vocation of the heart as it is of the mind.
Vote of Thanks and Conclusion
Dr Antony Sylvan D’Souza, Dean, FMMC, delivered the Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries, faculty, parents, and students for making the event memorable. Dr Venkatesh B.M., Vice Dean, along with the Principals of FMCI institutions, Medical Superintendents, faculty, and staff, attended the ceremony.
The White Coat Ceremony once again reaffirmed Father Muller Medical College’s reputation as a centre of academic excellence and compassionate healthcare, where faith and service go hand in hand in shaping the next generation of medical professionals.
