Mangaluru: NSS volunteers of Yenepoya Institute of Arts Science Commerce and Management (YIASCM), a constituent institute of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), organised a No Smoking Day awareness walkathon titled “Breathe Life” to highlight the harmful effects of smoking and tobacco consumption.
The awareness campaign was conducted by NSS Unit 5 and Unit 7 of the institute on Wednesday morning as part of No Smoking Day, encouraging the public to adopt a smoke-free and healthier lifestyle.
Walkathon begins at YIASCM campus
The walkathon began at 7:00 a.m. from the YIASCM campus at Balmatta and proceeded through major city routes before concluding at the City Clock Tower in Hampankatta, one of the busiest public areas in Mangaluru.
The initiative was organised in collaboration with the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate, reflecting a joint effort to promote public health awareness and responsible social behaviour.
Youth urged to lead social awareness
The walkathon was flagged off by Prof Jeevan Raj, Principal (I/C) of YIASCM.
Addressing the participants, he emphasised the crucial role of young people in spreading awareness about public health issues and urged students to actively participate in campaigns that promote a tobacco-free society.
He noted that awareness initiatives led by students can create a strong social impact and inspire communities to adopt healthier lifestyles.
Enthusiastic participation by NSS volunteers
More than 100 NSS volunteers, along with faculty members and students, participated enthusiastically in the walkathon.
Among the participants was Dr Rathnakar Shetty, Head of the Department of Computer Science, who joined the volunteers in spreading the message of a smoke-free environment.
Participants carried placards and awareness messages highlighting the health risks associated with smoking and tobacco use, encouraging the public to avoid such habits.
Street play spreads awareness in public spaces
Following the walkathon, NSS volunteers staged an awareness street play at the City Clock Tower and in front of Town Hall in Hampankatta.
The performance depicted the serious health hazards caused by smoking and tobacco consumption, capturing the attention of passers-by and delivering a powerful message about the importance of making healthier lifestyle choices.
The street play served as an engaging way to communicate the campaign’s message and prompted positive responses from the public.
Coordinated by NSS programme officers
The programme was coordinated by Ms Deepika, NSS Programme Officer for Unit 5, and Mr Shobith Kumar B, NSS Programme Officer for Unit 7.
Both officers appreciated the dedication shown by students in organising the event and emphasised that such initiatives play a vital role in building socially responsible citizens.
The campaign concluded with strong student participation and active public engagement, reinforcing the message of creating a healthier and smoke-free community in Mangaluru.
