The highly anticipated film ‘Abir Gulaal’, featuring Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor, has become the center of controversy as Indian film bodies continue to resist its release. This opposition persists despite the Bombay High Court’s 2023 dismissal of a petition that sought to prohibit Pakistani artists from working in India.
MNS and Shiv Sena Strongly Oppose Release
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, has expressed strong disapproval of the film’s release in Maharashtra. MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar stated that the party was unaware of the film’s release plans until its makers made an official announcement. Khopkar affirmed that MNS would not allow its screening, citing the presence of a Pakistani actor.
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam echoed similar sentiments, claiming that Pakistani artists fail to achieve widespread success in India due to the nation’s negative perception of Pakistan. He also emphasized that if a government policy exists regarding Pakistani artists, it should be clearly enforced.
Film Industry’s Firm Stance Post-Pulwama
Since the Pulwama attack, various film industry associations have maintained their opposition to collaborations with Pakistani talent. Ashoke Pandit, President of the Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association, confirmed the absence of a legal ban but reiterated the industry’s strict stance.
Meanwhile, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees is set to meet with the film’s makers before taking a final stand.
Uncertainty Over Government Policy
Actor Imran Zahid’s efforts to seek government clarity on the issue via RTI requests have led to vague responses, with ministries denying any official ban. Zahid warned industry professionals about the risks involved in working with Pakistani artists, emphasizing that uncertainty creates unnecessary challenges.
With its May 9 release date approaching, the fate of ‘Abir Gulaal’ remains uncertain amid ongoing opposition.
