It’s going to be a week since the Konkani movie Payann recently hit the big screen. While this may be nothing big compared to the big woody film industries (our konkani cinema doesn’t even have a wood attached to its name) it still is a proud moment for us Mangaloreans and more so our Konkani speaking Catholic community.
Stepping into the theater was like stepping into a church. It is not always that you have so many nuns entering one, all at once, and it did feel good. But I wonder what they made of the love triangle they viewed in it.
For yes, the movie Payann does come with a subtle love triangle, which in no way makes for any spoilers, and so while I am not here to give you a review of the movie, the love triangle is something that touched me the most and so I am here to talk about it.
So, the triangle goes like this. Christopher, like any male singer, is the kind of person that any woman would warm up to, sensitive, genuine, and with the right attitude, which was what attracted his fellow singer Preethi, who fell for him at first sight.
It was not long before the two became a couple, but it was not long that they stayed together either, all thanks to the fact that the girl soon found fell for another singer, more successful and richer, leaving the poor Christopher heartbroken and struggling to make it what with all the heartbreak.
But he was not alone. It was not long before there’s another woman on the scene, ‘Just Rashmi’ as his friend would often jokingly address when he spoke about her to Christopher. A budding singer on the scene, her entry was a clear sign of another affair that was soon to happen. But to the disappointment of the viewers, this never happened.
Rashmi never became Christopher’s girlfriend (as it was obvious that this was what she wished for) and neither did Cristel, the other girl that some viewers thought would become. And if you are someone like me, who likes love stories, you too would sit there wondering who would get lucky in the end,
The sad answer is that neither of them did. If you want an explanation to this, let me caution you that you can read on but there is a spoiler.
Ok, here we go. Neither of them would get lucky because Christopher could not choose. Christopher could not choose because, uh oh, I just don’t want to reveal the spoiler. Why don’t you go ahead and buy your tickets. The movie is still in theaters, you know.
All I will say is that here was Christopher dividing himself for the two women who loved him, sharing his struggle with one and leaving his legacy with another.
While Rashmi was entrusted with the task of singing on on his behalf, Cristel merely stood by Christopher in his difficult time. And that was Poyonn for me. The one sentence that i took home on leaving the theater that day was a question asked by the music teacher,
“Is love the goal of every relationship”
My answer to that is, yes, but love is of different kinds. Some people come into our lives, leave something for us and pass by.
It is up to us to recognise and make the most of it. Love is the goal of every relationship but know that not every one who we love is here to stay.
