Bengaluru: A legal complaint has been filed against Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh at the High Grounds Police Station after he allegedly hurt religious sentiments by mimicking the Daiva performance seen in Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1. The complaint, submitted by Bengaluru-based advocate Prashanth Metal, alleges that the actor’s comments and gestures during his stage address at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on 28 November were derogatory towards the Ullalthi Daiva, a sacred figure for the Tulu-speaking community.
Advocate alleges hurt religious sentiments
According to the complaint, Ranveer Singh recreated Rishab Shetty’s Ullalthi Daiva performance while addressing the audience at IFFI’s closing ceremony. The complainant states that although the actor appeared to be praising the film and Shetty’s portrayal, he allegedly referred to the Daiva using terms such as “demon” and “female ghost”.
Prashanth Metal argued in his written submission that these remarks insulted “millions of Hindus, particularly those in the Tulu-speaking community”, for whom Daiva traditions hold deep cultural and spiritual significance. He further claimed that Ranveer’s mimicry, coupled with the alleged mischaracterisation of the deity, amounted to an act that disrespected long-standing religious beliefs.
Complaint filed under BNS provisions
The complaint invokes Sections 299, 302 and 196 of the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, accusing the actor of actions that could provoke public outrage and hurt religious sentiments. The advocate stated that Ranveer Singh’s act was “illegal, offensive and deeply disrespectful” and has demanded that legal action be initiated.
Police officials have confirmed receipt of the complaint and stated that it will be examined as per procedure. No FIR had been registered at the time of reporting, but the matter has triggered strong discussions online and offline, particularly in Karnataka.
Video sparks controversy and online backlash
A video of Ranveer Singh’s act circulated rapidly on social media platforms, drawing divided reactions. Several users expressed displeasure, stating that Daiva traditions are sacred and should not be trivialised on entertainment stages. Many from the coastal Karnataka region also voiced concerns that the representation lacked cultural sensitivity.
Others, however, defended the actor, suggesting that his act was intended as appreciation for Rishab Shetty’s performance and not as mockery. As debates continued to grow, Ranveer Singh began trending across multiple platforms, prompting him to issue a public clarification.
Ranveer Singh issues public apology
A day before the complaint was filed, Ranveer Singh shared an apology on his Instagram Story. The actor clarified that he had no intention to offend anyone and had only meant to highlight the intensity and artistry of Rishab Shetty’s performance.
“My intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it takes to perform that particular scene the way he did, for which he has my utmost admiration,” he wrote.
He also added, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
While many accepted the apology, others argued that the matter should still be investigated due to the cultural sensitivity involved.
Cultural significance of Daiva traditions
The Ullalthi Daiva, featured prominently in Kantara Chapter 1, is rooted in the centuries-old ritualistic practices of coastal Karnataka, particularly in the Tulu region. Daiva worship involves elaborate performances, traditional music, sacred offerings and community gatherings. Because of this deep cultural connection, any misrepresentation is often viewed as disrespectful.
Experts note that the popularity of Kantara has elevated awareness of Tulu traditions but has also increased scrutiny over how they are portrayed or referenced in public cultural spaces. Ranveer Singh’s act, though intended as praise, has now become an example of how sensitive such depictions can be.
