MUMBAI: Confusion erupted online on Wednesday after fans noticed that actor Deepika Padukone’s name was missing from the end credits of Kalki 2898 AD on OTT platforms. The omission, spotted by several users, led to a wave of criticism against the film’s makers. However, checks later revealed that her name was restored or never removed in the official versions streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Fans allege removal of credit
Clips circulating on social media showed the end credits of Kalki 2898 AD without Deepika’s name, prompting outrage among her followers.
“OTT version of Kalki Part 1 removes Deepika Padukone’s name from credits,” read one viral post from a fan account. Several users accused the film’s producers, Vyjayanthi Movies, of being “petty and unprofessional.”
Screenshots and short clips of the alleged edit went viral, reigniting discussions about Deepika’s recent exit from the film’s sequel.
Credits confirmed intact on official OTT platforms
When Hindustan Times verified both the Netflix and Amazon Prime Video versions on Wednesday afternoon, Deepika’s name appeared in the cast list, placed right below Amitabh Bachchan’s.
The discrepancy appears to have originated from misleading or outdated footage circulating on social media, though neither the makers nor the streaming platforms issued an official clarification.
Background: The Deepika–Kalki controversy
Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin, was one of 2024’s biggest blockbusters, blending mythology and science fiction. The film featured Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Deepika Padukone in key roles and grossed over ₹1,000 crore globally. Deepika portrayed SUM-80, a pregnant woman hunted by Prabhas’ character and protected by Ashwatthama, played by Amitabh.
The film concluded with the message “Kalki Cinematic Universe continues,” teasing a multi-part franchise. However, in September, Vyjayanthi Movies confirmed that Deepika would not return for the sequel.
Reports suggested creative and contractual disagreements, with insiders claiming that Deepika sought revised remuneration and limited work hours following her return to work post-motherhood.
The sequel and ongoing developments
The upcoming sequel to Kalki 2898 AD is expected to expand on Ashwatthama’s mission to rescue SUM-80 and the rise of Kamal Haasan’s antagonist character. While the makers have yet to confirm Deepika’s replacement, speculation remains rife about who will take on the central female role.
The sequel’s release date has not been announced, though production is expected to begin in mid-2026.
Deepika’s upcoming projects
Meanwhile, Deepika is moving ahead with other major ventures. She recently stepped away from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit, reportedly due to her eight-hour work policy as a new mother.
Her next projects include King, opposite Shah Rukh Khan, and an untitled Atlee–Allu Arjun collaboration, marking her return to pan-India cinema.
Despite the brief confusion, fans continue to express strong support for the actor, calling her contribution to Kalki 2898 AD “integral to the film’s success.”
