Pakistani actor Fawad Khan is set to return to Bollywood with Abir Gulaal, releasing on May 9, 2025. Co-starring Vaani Kapoor and directed by Aarti S. Bagdi, the film has already stirred controversy, reigniting the long-standing debate on the inclusion of Pakistani talent in Indian cinema. Critics, particularly in Maharashtra, are calling for a boycott, citing ongoing political tensions.
In the midst of the uproar, actress Sushmita Sen voiced her support for artistic freedom. When asked about Fawad’s return, she told Instant Bollywood,
“Hunar aur creativity mein koi boundaries nahi hoti. Honi bhi nahi chahiye. Creativity is born from freedom, and there should be no borders when it comes to expression.”
Her remarks reflect a broader sentiment among many artists who believe that art, like sport, should transcend political divides.
Fawad Khan, known for his critically acclaimed roles in Khoobsurat (2014), Kapoor & Sons (2016), and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), built a loyal fan base in India. However, after heightened Indo-Pak tensions, cross-border collaborations saw a sharp decline.
The Abir Gulaal debate underscores the complex intersection of politics and art. While some demand strict lines be drawn, others, like Sen, advocate for creative unity in a divided world.
As the release nears, the film’s fate may rest not just on its content, but on whether audiences choose culture over conflict.
