The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, appealing for the prestigious Padma Shri award to be conferred posthumously on late actor Satish Shah. Representing 36 associations from the film and television industry, the federation described the honour as a fitting tribute to the veteran’s enduring legacy and his contributions to Indian entertainment over four decades.
A heartfelt appeal to the Prime Minister
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, FWICE expressed deep admiration for Shah’s legacy. The federation wrote, “Respected Modiji, with folded hands and deep respect, we, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), humbly appeal to kindly consider conferring the Padma Shri Award (Posthumously) upon Late Shri Satish Shah, one of India’s most beloved and distinguished actors.”
The letter described Shah as “a rare and gifted artist whose work brought joy, laughter, and emotion to millions across our nation.” His performances in iconic television shows such as Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, as well as films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Main Hoon Na, were cited as milestones that defined Indian comedy and character acting.
Remembering a gifted performer
Satish Shah, who passed away in Mumbai on Saturday at the age of 74, was known for his impeccable comic timing and versatile roles across film and television. He was reportedly battling complications from a kidney ailment after a transplant earlier this year.
FWICE’s statement emphasised that his loss has created an “emotional void in the hearts of all who knew him,” and that recognising him with a Padma Shri would “honour a life devoted to art, culture, and service through entertainment.”
A compassionate soul beyond the screen
Beyond his acting career, Shah was admired for his generosity and support towards industry welfare. FWICE noted, “He was deeply respected by the working community and supported several welfare initiatives of FWICE with generosity and grace.”
The federation highlighted that Shah often lent his voice and time to causes supporting junior artists, technicians, and daily wage workers in the film industry — an effort that cemented his image as not just a performer but a humanitarian.
A fitting tribute to a cultural icon
The letter to the Prime Minister read, “Honouring him with the Padma Shri Award (Posthumously) would be a most fitting tribute to a life devoted to art, culture, and service through entertainment. It would recognise not just an actor, but a man who made India smile for over four decades.”
FWICE’s leadership, representing lakhs of film and television workers, also expressed faith in the government’s continued efforts to recognise India’s cultural icons. “We, the entire film and television fraternity under FWICE, place this humble request before you with the deepest faith in your continued encouragement,” the letter concluded.
Remembered by co-stars and fans
In the days following his passing, tributes poured in from across the entertainment fraternity. The cast of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai reunited at his prayer meet in Mumbai, singing the show’s title track as a farewell gesture. Actors, directors, and fans across the country shared memories of Shah’s warmth, humour, and professionalism.
As the industry mourns, FWICE’s appeal stands as a call to formally honour the legacy of an actor who left an indelible mark on Indian entertainment. If accepted, the posthumous Padma Shri would serve as a national recognition of his artistry and humanity.
