MumbaiGenelia D’Souza is set to return to the silver screen in Sitaare Zameen Par, playing the wife of Aamir Khan in the much-anticipated Hindi adaptation of the Spanish hit Campeones. While excitement is high for the film, Genelia recently opened up about the industry’s treatment of married actresses and the hurdles she faced after tying the knot.

In a candid interview with Filmymantra Media, Genelia shared that the news of her casting in an Aamir Khan project was met with admiration. “Everyone kept saying, ‘Wow, you’re so lucky to be in an Aamir Khan film!’ Yes, I am lucky, but he also made me audition—three times! He saw something in me, and others could have too,” she said pointedly.

The actress, who took a step back from acting after marriage, criticized the unspoken bias in Bollywood. “I feel like people think, ‘She’s married, she doesn’t need this role.’ But why not? Filmmaking has evolved—so should our thinking.”

She emphasized the importance of age-appropriate casting, adding, “If you want someone in their 40s, cast someone who understands those nuances. A much younger actor can’t bring the same depth to that role.”

In Sitaare Zameen Par, both Aamir and Genelia portray characters in their early 40s. Although Aamir is 60, he downplayed the age gap, stating that today’s audiences and filmmaking tools allow for more flexibility and realism in casting.

Directed by R.S. Prasanna, the film marks Aamir Khan’s return to the big screen, following a hiatus after Laal Singh Chaddha. The emotional sports drama is slated for release in June 2025.
