The Goa government has made the Hindi film Chhaava, based on the life of Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, tax-free in the state. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced the decision on Wednesday via X, coinciding with the 395th birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Sawant expressed his pride in exempting the film from tax, emphasizing that it highlights the bravery and sacrifices of Sambhaji Maharaj, who resisted both the Mughals and the Portuguese for Dev, Desh, and Dharma.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also declared the film tax-free in his state on the same day.

Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava stars Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, with Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in pivotal roles. The historical drama has garnered attention for its grand visuals and intense action sequences.

ETimes rated the film 3.5 stars, praising Vicky Kaushal’s performance and the film’s epic scale. However, the review noted that the first half lacked narrative depth, feeling more like a montage of battles and songs. While AR Rahman’s soundtrack added grandeur, the review suggested that composers Ajay-Atul might have been a better fit for the film’s historical setting.
