MUMBAI: The Maddock Horror Comedy Universe has emerged as one of Bollywood’s most successful cinematic universes, blending humour with Indian folklore and supernatural elements. With the release of Thamma, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, the franchise has added another blockbuster to its growing list of hits. The film crossed the Rs 100-crore mark on Tuesday, just eight days after its release, making it the fourth film from the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe to achieve the milestone.

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, Thamma follows a journalist named Alok who transforms into a vampiric creature called Betal after an encounter with a mysterious woman named Tadaka. The film’s strong opening, festive release timing, and positive word-of-mouth have ensured a steady box office performance.

Here’s a look at how long it took each film in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe to join the prestigious Rs 100-crore club.

Stree (2018): 17 days to Rs 100 crore

The Maddock Horror Comedy Universe began with Stree, directed by Amar Kaushik and starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. Set in the fictional town of Chanderi, the film draws inspiration from the urban legend of Nale Ba, where a ghostly woman is said to abduct men who roam the streets at night.

Stree opened to strong word-of-mouth and steady collections, officially entering the Rs 100-crore club on its 17th day. The film maintained its momentum for several weeks and concluded its domestic run with Rs 129.83 crore. Its combination of humour, horror, and social commentary helped redefine the horror-comedy genre in India.

Bhediya (2022): Missed the Rs 100-crore mark

Bhediya, also directed by Amar Kaushik, was the second entry in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe. The film starred Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon and revolved around a man who transforms into a werewolf after being bitten by a mythical wolf in the forests of Arunachal Pradesh.

While Bhediya received praise for its visual effects and performances, it couldn’t replicate Stree’s commercial success. The film collected Rs 68.99 crore domestically and was considered an average performer at the box office. Despite that, Bhediya played a vital role in expanding the universe’s narrative and connecting characters across films.

Munjya (2024): 35 days to Rs 100 crore

Aditya Sarpotdar’s Munjya brought fresh energy to the franchise. Based on a popular folk legend from the Konkan region, the film explores the spirit of a young Brahmin boy, Gotya, who falls in love with an older woman named Munni. Featuring Abhay Verma and Sharvari Wagh, Munjya skillfully blended mythology, horror, and comedy with a coming-of-age narrative.

The film achieved the Rs 100-crore milestone on its 35th day in theatres. Competing against big releases like Kalki 2898 AD, Munjya benefited from strong family audiences and repeat viewership, eventually earning Rs 100.03 crore in India.

Stree 2 (2024): Just 3 days to Rs 100 crore

Stree 2, the sequel to the 2018 blockbuster, shattered box office records upon release. The film reunited the original cast — Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, and Aparshakti Khurana — and introduced a new supernatural entity, Sarkata, a headless creature abducting women at night.

Released on Independence Day, Stree 2 became the fastest Bollywood film of 2024 to cross the Rs 100-crore mark — in less than three days. It went on to earn Rs 597.99 crore domestically, cementing its position as the highest-grossing film in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe and one of the biggest Hindi films of all time.

Thamma (2025): 8 days to Rs 100 crore

With Thamma, Maddock Films has scored yet another hit. Released on October 21, 2025, the film has already crossed the Rs 100-crore mark within eight days, surpassing Bhediya’s lifetime collection and closing in on Munjya.

The film’s success is being seen as Ayushmann Khurrana’s biggest box office opener to date, marking a turning point in his career. Thamma’s mix of supernatural lore, emotional depth, and humour has resonated widely with both urban and small-town audiences.

Maddock Universe’s box office streak

With Thamma’s success, four out of five films from the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe have now entered the Rs 100-crore club — a rare achievement for an Indian film franchise outside of action or superhero genres. The universe continues to build interconnected storylines, with future projects rumoured to feature crossovers between Stree, Munjya, and Thamma.

As the horror-comedy trend continues to dominate Bollywood’s box office, the Maddock Universe stands as a testament to original storytelling, creative risk-taking, and consistent audience engagement.
