Actor Janhvi Kapoor recently spoke candidly about the emotional toll of losing her mother, legendary actor Sridevi, while also reflecting on the criticism and public scrutiny she endured.
‘I cannot get over losing my mom’
Appearing on a podcast hosted by Raj Shamani, Janhvi shared that her mother’s passing in 2018 left a deep and lasting void.
She described the experience as her “biggest trauma,” adding that it felt like she lost not just her mother but also a part of her father, Boney Kapoor.
“I cannot get over the pain of losing my mom… there is no one like her,” she said, recalling Sridevi’s warmth, humour, and influence on the family.
Pain of public judgement
Janhvi also addressed the criticism Sridevi faced, particularly being labelled a “homewrecker” following her relationship with Boney Kapoor.
She revealed that such remarks deeply affected Sridevi emotionally.
“People were not very kind when she was around… it played on her mind,” Janhvi said, adding that she now understands her mother’s struggles better.
A relationship under scrutiny
Before marrying Sridevi in 1996, Boney Kapoor was married to Mona Shourie Kapoor, with whom he has two children — Arjun Kapoor and Anshula Kapoor. His relationship with Sridevi drew significant media attention due to the overlap, making it one of the most talked-about personal lives in Bollywood at the time.
Despite the controversy, the couple remained together until Sridevi’s death in 2018.
Remembering a cinematic icon
Born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan, Sridevi was one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated actors, known for films like Chandni, Mr India, Sadma, and English Vinglish. Her final film, Mom, earned her a posthumous National Award for Best Actress.
She passed away in Dubai at the age of 54, with the cause of death reported as accidental drowning.
Looking ahead
Janhvi, who debuted shortly after her mother’s passing with Dhadak, continues to build her career. She was recently seen in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, alongside Varun Dhawan and Sanya Malhotra.
Her reflections offer a deeply personal glimpse into grief, legacy, and the impact of public perception on even the biggest stars.
