Amid escalating tension over his controversial statement that “Kannada was born out of Tamil,” actor and politician Kamal Haasan has firmly declined to apologise, stating he will only do so if proven wrong. His comments have triggered a sharp backlash in Karnataka, with pro-Kannada groups and the Kannada Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) threatening to ban his upcoming film Thug Life unless a public apology is made by May 30.
Speaking to the media outside DMK headquarters in Chennai, Haasan reiterated his stance:
“This is a democratic nation. I believe in law, justice, and the power of love. My affection for Karnataka, Andhra, and Kerala is genuine. Only those with political motives will question it.”
The KFCC, led by president M Narasimhalu, held discussions and declared that without a public apology, Thug Life will not see a Karnataka release. Former KFCC head Sa Ra Govindu was more direct:
“We will stand with Kannada activists and vehemently oppose the film’s release unless he publicly retracts his statement.”
Haasan, who leads Makkal Needhi Maiam, had earlier called on Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin to discuss Rajya Sabha election preparations, as the DMK has offered him a seat.
While the controversy deepens, Haasan remains unfazed, stating he has faced such threats before and won’t bow under pressure without cause.
