Kamal Haasan, gearing up for his upcoming gangster action thriller Thug Life directed by Mani Ratnam, has landed in controversy over a recent statement claiming that “Kannada was born out of Tamil.” The remark has sparked widespread outrage in Karnataka.
As per reports, tensions escalated when a man set Kamal Haasan’s photograph ablaze near Pavitra Paradise Circle in Bengaluru, causing traffic disruptions. Police promptly intervened and booked the individual under Sections 270 and 283 of the BNS for creating public nuisance and spreading misinformation.
The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has taken a firm stand, warning that Thug Life will not be permitted to release in the state unless Kamal Haasan issues a public apology. The KFCC president stated their support for Kannada activists and hinted at large-scale protests if the actor remains unapologetic.
Responding to the backlash, Kamal Haasan addressed the media, reaffirming his belief in democracy and legal process. He emphasized his deep respect for Karnataka and its people, stating, “My love for Karnataka is true… only those with an agenda will doubt it.” However, when asked if he would apologise, the actor asserted that he would only do so if he genuinely felt he had erred, noting that he has faced threats before and remained unfazed.
The controversy now casts uncertainty over the release of Thug Life in Karnataka, amid rising linguistic sensitivities and regional pride.
