Kangana Ranaut’s latest directorial venture, Emergency, has made its streaming debut on Netflix and is earning praise for its intense portrayal of historical events. The political drama, which also features Ranaut in the lead role, has resonated strongly with digital audiences since its release.
On Sunday, the actress took to Instagram Stories to respond to the enthusiastic reactions pouring in. When a viewer suggested that Emergency deserves to be India’s submission for the Oscars, Kangana shared the message with a sharp retort.
She wrote, “America won’t be eager to confront its own reality — how it intimidates, controls, and manipulates emerging nations. We’ve highlighted that truth in Emergency. They can keep their meaningless Oscar. We have our National Awards.”
The film revisits a crucial chapter during the 1971 India-Pakistan conflict, depicting Indira Gandhi’s visit to the White House. In a key scene, Richard Nixon ridicules Gandhi’s sari, offending her. Later, when Nixon dispatches American forces to Bangladesh, Gandhi counters by ensuring India intervenes first, leading to Bangladesh’s independence.
A recipient of four National Awards already, Kangana is being widely applauded for her performance. Responding to another fan who called her acting “outstanding,” she teased, “People are calling my work in Emergency my finest yet. Better than Queen, TWM2, Fashion, Thalaivi? Watch and decide.”
The film also boasts powerful performances by Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik.
Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, Emergency premiered in theatres on January 17.
