Filmmaker Karan Johar recently opened up about the harsh criticism he faces online, especially over nepotism and his latest production, Nadaaniyan, which introduces Ibrahim Ali Khan, son of Saif Ali Khan, to Bollywood. Speaking to Galatta Plus, Johar addressed the backlash, pointing out that while he gets slammed for promoting star kids, his work with outsiders often goes unnoticed.

He referenced collaborations with director Neeraj Ghaywan on films like Ajeeb Daastaans and the upcoming Homebound, saying, “Cinema intellectuals praise others, but if Dharma Productions backs it, silence follows.” He added that trolling Nadaaniyan has become trendy: “It’s fashionable now. The more you hate on it, the more content you generate. People love to bash nepo kids.”

Defending his casting choices, Johar insisted he selects talent he believes in, regardless of their family background. Responding to the claim that he represents industry bias, he said, “If I’m the face of Bollywood hate, thank you for the title. But do I deserve it? I don’t think so.”

He also addressed Babil Khan’s emotional video, where the late Irrfan Khan’s son called the industry “fake.” Johar expressed empathy, saying he felt terrible both as a parent and as someone who understands the emotional toll the industry can take.

Despite the criticism, Johar maintains that he will continue to support both insiders and outsiders based on merit.
