Malayalam cinema has produced many unforgettable tragedies, but few have left as deep a mark as Sibi Malayil’s 1989 masterpiece Kireedam — a film often hailed as the finest tragedy ever made in the industry. Starring Mohanlal, Thilakan, Parvathy Jayaram, and Mohan Raj, and written by the legendary AK Lohithadas, the film remains a benchmark in performance, writing, and emotional impact.

Kireedam tells the heartbreaking story of Sethumadhavan (Mohanlal), a young man whose dream of becoming a police officer collapses after a violent confrontation with the feared criminal Keerikadan Jose. When Sethumadhavan beats Jose for attacking his father Achuthan Nair (Thilakan), society labels him a local don — a moment that shatters not just his future, but the life he imagined.

The film’s climax is still regarded as one of the most powerful in Indian cinema, especially Thilakan’s iconic plea: “Ninte achanaada parayunne, kathi thaazhe ideda.”

Lohithadas wrote the entire script in one sitting — in just three days

Many consider Kireedam a masterclass in storytelling, but few know that Lohithadas wrote it in a single stretch of three days, without stopping even to eat or bathe.

In an interview on Amrita TV, he explained:

“The emotional intensity was so high that I just touched the pen to the paper, and it kept writing itself.”

He worked nonstop partly because he was worried he might miss director Sibi Malayil’s wedding on the fourth day.

The title Kireedam originally belonged to another project

Sibi Malayil revealed that Lohithadas had first given the title Kireedam to a different script. But since that film’s producer rejected the name, Sibi suggested using it for their Mohanlal-starrer — a choice that proved perfect.
The other project, initially meant to be Kireedam, ultimately became Mukthi, directed by IV Sasi and starring Mammootty.

A fast shoot, a modest budget, and Mohanlal’s gesture

According to Manorama Online:

  • Kireedam was shot in 25 days
  • The budget was Rs 23.5 lakh
  • Mohanlal reduced his fee from Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh out of friendship with producer N Krishnakumar (Unni)

The film went on to become a critical and commercial success, earning Mohanlal his first National Award (Special Mention) and spawning remakes in multiple languages — including a Tamil version starring Ajith Kumar.

Three decades later, Kireedam remains a towering achievement in Malayalam cinema — a tragic tale so emotionally raw that many admirers admit they still struggle to watch it a second time.
