Imphal: After gaining international recognition at prestigious film festivals across the world, Manipur-based film Boong is set to hit theatres in India on September 19, 2025. Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and backed by filmmaker Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Movies, the coming-of-age drama has already been lauded for its storytelling and performances.
Story of a child’s journey
Boong follows the story of a young Manipuri boy, Boong, who wants to surprise his mother with the most precious gift he can imagine — bringing his father back home. His quest leads to an unexpected discovery, a gift that marks a new beginning.
Child actor Gugun Kipgen plays the lead role, supported by Vikram Kochhar, Bala Hijam, Hamom Sadananda, and Jenny Khurai in prominent roles.
International acclaim
The film has enjoyed a celebrated run on the global film festival circuit in 2024–25. It was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, Asia Pacific Screen Awards, International South Asian Film Festival in Canada, Berkshire International Film Festival, and Indogerman Film Week, among others.
At the International South Asian Film Festival in Canada, the jury praised the film, stating, “The story of Boong resonates with a powerful realism, beautifully conveyed through the eyes of innocence and mischief. It’s a wholesome yet poignant experience; it takes the audience on a heartfelt journey that lingers in the mind.”
The film also bagged the Excellence in Feature Filmmaking award, while Gugun Kipgen received a Special Mention award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) for his performance.

Excel Movies, the film’s official distributor, announced the release date on Instagram with the caption: “Come and say hello to Boong.
