After a disappointing 2024, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has roared back in 2025, silencing critics by amassing a staggering ₹500+ crore at the box office. Despite being a veteran of over four decades, the actor faced skepticism last year when both Malaikottai Vaaliban and Barroz 3D failed to meet expectations.
Though Malaikottai Vaaliban earned ₹29.75 crore and Barroz 3D brought in ₹15.1 crore globally, the returns were underwhelming given their ambitious budgets. Barroz, in particular, was touted as a CGI spectacle but received criticism for poor visual effects, while Vaaliban had limited reach despite some appreciation.
But 2025 marked a phenomenal turnaround. Mohanlal’s L2 Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, stormed the box office with ₹265.5 crore globally, becoming Mollywood’s biggest hit ever and the second-highest-grossing Indian film of the year. Following closely was his April release Thudarum, which earned ₹234.5 crore worldwide, placing fourth on the national list.
Even a re-release of his 2007 hit Chotta Mumbai added ₹1.05 crore in just two days, pushing his 2025 gross to ₹501.05 crore — a record-breaking feat for Malayalam cinema.
With upcoming titles like the action-packed Vrusshabha (Oct 16) and emotional family drama Hridayapoorvam (Aug 28), Mohanlal’s winning streak may continue. Hype is also building for a potential Mollywood mega-film starring Mohanlal, Mammootty, and Fahadh Faasil — a historic moment in the making.
