New Delhi: A day after some protesting farmers hoisted a pennant at the Red Fort, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) – the Congress’ student wing – on Wednesday demanded registration of a case against Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu over the violence in Delhi.

NSUI General Secretary Nagesh Kariyappa and NSUI National Secretary Hussain Sultania filed a complaint with Delhi Police Commissioner S.N. Shrivastava and demanded appropriate action against Sidhu. They also wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding action against the actor.

In their complaint to the police commissioner, Kariyappa said it was wrong and shameful to carry out such a well-planned conspiracy by “anti-social elements” like Sidhu.

“Such incidents send the wrong message in the country and society. Therefore, the administration should take appropriate action on this and prevent such incidents from happening in future, so that India’s democratic system remains intact,” Kariyappa said.

He said that for the last two months the farmers were protesting peacefully on the outskirts of the national capital.

He also emphasised that despite 11 round of meetings remaining inconclusive with the government, the farmer protests remained largely peaceful.

Kariyappa alleged, “Sidhu campaigned for BJP’s Sunny Deol in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. The incident which happened yesterday at Red Fort is a conspiracy planned by the BJP government to disrupt the farmers’ protest.”

He also said that entering a place like Red Fort with such high security is not a joke and that too on Republic Day. He also accused the government of playing with the sentiments of the nation and trying all “dirty means” to end the farmers’ protests.

“Sidhu is identified for inciting violence yet no complaint or action has been taken against him. BJP government was fully aware of his plan and favoured him to create the disturbance. Even the men with swords were planted by them,” the NSUI leader claimed.
