Mumbai: Veteran actor Rakesh Bedi has revealed that he initially turned down Uri: The Surgical Strike, but eventually agreed to do the film after being persuaded by his daughter Ritika.

Reluctance over a one-scene role

Speaking in a recent interaction with Farah Khan, Rakesh Bedi shared that he was hesitant to be part of the film because his role was limited to just one scene, which was to be shot in Serbia.

“I had refused Uri because it had just one scene in Serbia,” he said, explaining his initial decision to opt out of the project directed by Aditya Dhar.

Daughter Ritika’s advice proves crucial

However, it was his daughter Ritika who convinced him to reconsider. Encouraging him to support new talent, she pointed out that Aditya Dhar was a promising debutant filmmaker.

“Dad, he’s a new director and very promising. Please do the film,” she urged. Rakesh Bedi’s wife also backed Ritika’s argument, stating that experienced actors should support emerging filmmakers to ensure fresh talent gets opportunities.

Ritika added that refusing such roles could create a cycle where new directors struggle to find support, making it harder for them to break into the industry.

Eventually, Rakesh agreed to take up the role. He later recalled that Aditya Dhar personally approached him and insisted he be part of the film, reinforcing his daughter’s belief in the project.

Light-hearted family moments

The conversation also featured humorous exchanges within the family. Ritika jokingly claimed that she deserved a reward for her advice, quipping that she was expecting a Range Rover.

Reacting to the joke, the family laughed it off, with Rakesh Bedi and his wife teasing her about her playful exaggeration.

Role in Uri and its impact

In Uri: The Surgical Strike, Rakesh Bedi played a Pakistani government officer, a brief but noteworthy role in the film. Despite limited screen time, the film went on to become a massive commercial and critical success, further validating his daughter’s advice.

The 2019 film, starring Vicky Kaushal in the lead, was widely appreciated for its patriotic narrative and powerful performances.

Resurgence with Dhurandhar franchise

In recent times, Rakesh Bedi has witnessed renewed popularity, especially following his performances in the Dhurandhar series. His portrayal of the cunning politician Jameel Jamali, marked by sharp wit and comic timing, has resonated strongly with audiences.

He has also become a familiar face in advertising campaigns and public appearances. Recently, he walked the ramp alongside Rakesh Roshan at Anu Ranjan’s Beti Charity Walk 2026 in Mumbai.

A long and versatile career

Rakesh Bedi’s career spans decades across television and cinema. He has been part of several popular TV shows, including Shrimaan Shrimati, Yeh Duniya Ghazab Ki, Sumit Sambhal Lega and Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai!.

His filmography includes notable titles such as Chashme Buddoor, Betaaj Badshah and Bewafa Sanam.

Conclusion

Rakesh Bedi’s anecdote highlights the importance of trusting new talent and being open to opportunities, even when they seem small. His decision to take on a brief role in Uri: The Surgical Strike not only contributed to a successful film but also underscored how timely advice—especially from the younger generation—can make a lasting impact.
