Actor-director Rishab Shetty returns with a powerful avatar in Kantara: Chapter 1, the much-anticipated prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara. On the occasion of Shetty’s birthday, Hombale Films unveiled a striking new poster featuring the actor in a ferocious warrior look, armed with a sword and clad in period attire — hinting at the film’s mythical and historical tone.
A prequel to a cultural phenomenon
Described as a “divine cinematic phenomenon”, Kantara: Chapter 1 explores the origins behind the legend that captivated audiences globally. The poster release was accompanied by the caption:
“Where legends are born and the roar of the wild echoes. Kantara – A prequel to the masterpiece that moved millions.”
The film is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on October 2, 2025, aligning with Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra. It promises an immersive narrative steeped in folklore, spirituality, and action.
Production hurdles and commitment to vision
Despite facing setbacks during production — including a boat capsizing, forest department notices, and the unfortunate death of a junior artist — the filmmakers remained committed to their vision. The delays pushed the schedule, but Hombale Films confirmed that the movie is now on track for its October release.
A war epic in the making
In a bid to elevate the action and intensity, the production features an elaborate war sequence choreographed with the help of national and international action directors. Over 500 trained fighters and a crowd of 3,000 extras have been engaged for the sequence, indicating the scale and ambition of the film.
The legacy of Kantara
‘Kantara’ (2022), directed and headlined by Rishab Shetty, became a surprise critical and commercial hit, praised for its portrayal of regional traditions, Daiva Kola rituals, and forest politics. The film earned Shetty the Best Actor award at the 70th National Film Awards, while also being recognised as the Best Popular Film for providing wholesome entertainment.
Hombale’s expanding cinematic universe
With Kantara: Chapter 1, Hombale Films looks to expand its mytho-fantasy franchise. The studio also has Salaar: Part 2 – Shouryaanga Parvam and other major releases in the pipeline, cementing its reputation as a powerhouse in Indian cinema.
The film is written and directed by Rishab Shetty and co-produced by Vijay Kiragandur and Chaluve Gowda.
