Actor Rishab Shetty’s recent film Kantara Chapter 1 has emerged as a blockbuster, but it sparked controversy after a fan dressed as Daiva and mimicked a possession scene from the movie at a theatre in Tamil Nadu. In response, Rishab appealed to his fans to refrain from such acts, stressing the sacredness of Daiva worship and its cultural significance to the Tulu community.
Actor’s appeal to fans
In an interview with India Today, Rishab Shetty expressed his dismay over the incident, saying, “Ye bahot dukh ki baat hai. Us soch se humne nahi kiya hai film. Bahot bura lagta hai humko. Main aapke through unko request karta hun ki aisa nahi karo… Cinema ko cinema ke roop me dekho. Lekin jo Daiva ko hum worship kiye hain, it was very sacred.”
He explained that the film portrays Daiva Nartak (spiritual performers) with deep seriousness and respect, and any casual imitation undermines the devotion and cultural sentiments of the community. “Har baar vo focus me rehta hai. Har baar vo Daiva ka aashirwaad le ke hum karte hain. Lekin jo kuch log excitement me karte hain… aisa mat karo,” he added.
Rishab further clarified that the film’s depiction is meant for a cinematic experience, and Daiva worship is sacred. He requested audiences to enjoy the movie respectfully without trivialising its spiritual aspects.
Hombale Films issues statement
Production house Hombale Films also released a note urging fans and the public to avoid mimicking Daiva characters in theatres or public spaces. The statement highlighted that Dhaivaradhane, or Daiva worship, is a profound symbol of faith and cultural pride in Tulunadu, Karnataka, and is not intended for casual performance or imitation.
The note read, “Dhaivaradhane or Daiva worship, as featured in our film, is rooted in deep spiritual tradition and is not intended for performance or casual mimicry. Such acts amount to trivializing our belief system and deeply hurt the religious sentiments and faith of the Tulu community.”
Hombale Films stressed the importance of upholding the sacred nature of Dhaivaradhane and preserving its cultural heritage. The production house also thanked fans for the overwhelming positive response to the film while reminding them to act responsibly.
Cultural and cinematic significance
Kantara Chapter 1 celebrates the cultural and spiritual traditions of the Tulu community, focusing on the Daiva rituals that form a significant part of coastal Karnataka’s heritage. The film combines mythology, folklore, and cinematic storytelling, offering audiences both entertainment and insight into regional traditions.
Rishab Shetty emphasised that the film team ensures respectful and careful portrayal of Daiva Nartaks during shooting. Any attempts by fans to replicate the rituals for social media attention or amusement hurt the sentiments of the community.
Conclusion
Rishab Shetty’s message underscores the balance between cinema and cultural sensitivity, reminding audiences to experience films like Kantara Chapter 1 with respect for tradition and spirituality. Both the actor and Hombale Films urged fans to celebrate the movie as cinema while honouring its sacred roots, preserving the sanctity of Daiva worship for future generations.
