Mumbai: Comedian Samay Raina has opened up about the financial turmoil he experienced following the controversy surrounding his show India’s Got Latent. Speaking during a recent appearance on Dostcast, Raina shared that the fallout from the incident left him struggling to manage finances and fearing bankruptcy.

According to Raina, the controversy led to an immediate loss of professional opportunities. Several upcoming episodes of his show were cancelled, as collaborators grew hesitant about being associated with the project. In addition, sponsors withdrew their support, compounding the financial strain.

He explained that he had already received payments from sponsors, which he had invested in fixed deposits. When the deals fell through, he was forced to break those deposits to return the money, putting him in a difficult financial position.

“I lost everything,” Raina said, describing the period as one of the most challenging phases of his career.

Fear of going bankrupt like Amitabh Bachchan

Raina further revealed that the situation triggered fears of facing a financial collapse similar to that experienced by Amitabh Bachchan in the late 1990s.

At the time, Bachchan’s company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited, had collapsed, reportedly leaving him with debts of around ₹90 crore. The crisis led to legal troubles and intense pressure from creditors, with reports suggesting he was at risk of losing his home.

Drawing parallels, Raina said he was under immense stress as multiple projects fell apart simultaneously. He had signed deals, including one with BookMyShow, and had already invested advance payments.

However, as the controversy escalated, brands and collaborators began asking for refunds, leaving him scrambling to arrange funds. “I was extremely scared. I didn’t know what I would do,” he said, adding that he believed no brand would be willing to associate with him at that time.

What triggered the India’s Got Latent controversy

The controversy dates back to February 2025, when content creators including Ranveer Allahbadia, Ashish Chanchlani and Apoorva Mukhija appeared as panellists on India’s Got Latent.

During the episode, a remark by Allahbadia related to parents and sex sparked widespread backlash on social media. The controversy quickly escalated, leading to multiple FIRs being filed against the creators involved.

As a result, Raina was compelled to remove the show from YouTube. The incident also had legal implications, with the matter reaching the Supreme Court of India. In March 2025, the court allowed Allahbadia to resume his podcast after the controversy.

Mental health impact and future plans

Beyond financial losses, Raina admitted that the situation took a toll on his mental health. He described feeling helpless during the peak of the controversy, as public backlash and professional setbacks unfolded simultaneously.

In his latest comedy special, Still Alive, Raina reflected on the incident and revealed that the controversial joke had reportedly been repeated multiple times during filming, though only one instance was included in the final cut that went public.

Despite the challenges, Raina appears to be moving forward. He has hinted at the possibility of a second season of India’s Got Latent, signalling a potential comeback after the setback.

Conclusion

Samay Raina’s experience highlights the unpredictable nature of digital content careers, where controversies can rapidly impact both reputation and financial stability. While the India’s Got Latent row led to significant losses and uncertainty, the comedian’s return with new content suggests resilience and a willingness to rebuild.
