Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film King has reportedly secured a record-breaking overseas distribution deal worth Rs 175 crore, setting a new benchmark for Indian cinema even before its theatrical release. Phars Films has acquired the overseas distribution rights for the Siddharth Anand directorial through a minimum guarantee (MG) deal, according to a report by Pinkvilla.
The reported agreement marks a significant change in the film’s overseas distribution plans. King was earlier expected to be distributed internationally by Yash Raj Films (YRF), which has handled the overseas releases of several Shah Rukh Khan films.
However, Phars Films has now reportedly taken over the responsibility after agreeing to pay a minimum guarantee of Rs 175 crore. The deal is being described as unprecedented for an Indian film, with previous overseas distribution agreements reportedly not reaching the Rs 100 crore MG mark.
The substantial amount reflects the distributor’s confidence in Shah Rukh Khan’s international appeal and the commercial potential of the film. However, the size of the deal also raises expectations for its overseas box office performance.
Phars Films reportedly acquires King overseas rights
According to Pinkvilla, Phars Films has paid Rs 175 crore as a minimum guarantee to acquire the overseas distribution rights for King. Under this arrangement, the distributor commits a guaranteed amount to the film’s producers, with the subsequent earnings and distribution terms governed by the agreement.
The reported deal is different from the earlier arrangement involving YRF. The original overseas distribution plan was understood to be based on a commission structure, under which the distributor would charge a fee for handling the film rather than paying a fixed minimum guarantee.
Phars Films is expected to follow a different strategy for releasing the film across international markets. The company reportedly plans to sell individual territories, including Germany and North America, to sub-distributors.
It is also expected to handle the Middle East market directly, where the company is based. This approach would allow Phars Films to manage some territories itself while working with local distribution partners in others.
Several territory distributors may remain the same as those expected under the earlier YRF arrangement. However, the biggest changes are reportedly likely in North America, the United Kingdom and the Middle East, where YRF generally distributes films through its own offices.
King faces a high overseas box office target
The reported Rs 175 crore minimum guarantee has raised expectations for King’s international earnings. According to Pinkvilla, the film may need to collect around $50 million overseas, estimated at approximately Rs 475 crore, to reach the break-even level under the reported distribution arrangement.
This would be a demanding target, considering the overseas performances of Shah Rukh Khan’s recent blockbusters.
Both Pathaan and Jawan reportedly earned around Rs 400 crore each in overseas markets. If the estimates cited in the report hold, King would need to surpass those figures to meet the projected overseas benchmark.
The target also highlights the commercial risks associated with a high-value minimum guarantee deal. While such an agreement demonstrates confidence in a film’s prospects, it also places considerable pressure on its theatrical performance.
The final financial outcome will depend on factors such as ticket sales, market-wise distribution arrangements, audience response and the film’s performance during its theatrical run. The reported break-even estimate should therefore be viewed as a projection rather than a confirmed figure.
Hollywood releases could intensify competition
King is expected to face competition from major Hollywood releases during its theatrical window. The report specifically mentions Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part 3 as films that could compete for audiences in international markets.
Both titles are expected to attract considerable attention from global moviegoers, particularly in territories where Hollywood franchises have established audiences.
For King, the overseas market will be particularly important because of the reported distribution commitment. Shah Rukh Khan has a substantial international fan base, but the film will still need to maintain strong audience interest across different territories.
Competition from Hollywood productions could influence screen availability, show timings and audience choices. The film’s release strategy and promotional campaign may therefore play an important role in helping it secure a strong opening internationally.
Its performance will also be closely watched because the reported deal is considerably larger than previous overseas minimum guarantees for Indian films.
Shah Rukh Khan reunites with Siddharth Anand after Pathaan
King marks Shah Rukh Khan’s second collaboration with director Siddharth Anand after their successful 2023 action film Pathaan.
The upcoming film features a large ensemble cast, with Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role. His daughter, Suhana Khan, is also part of the project, adding another point of interest for audiences.
The cast includes Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Arshad Warsi, Anil Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat and Raghav Juyal.
The combination of Shah Rukh Khan and Siddharth Anand has already generated interest because of their previous collaboration. Pathaan was a major commercial success and contributed to Shah Rukh Khan’s return to the big screen in a leading action role after a gap.
With King, the actor and filmmaker are expected to collaborate on another large-scale theatrical project. The film’s ensemble cast and international distribution deal have further raised expectations around its release.
King set for December 24 theatrical release
King is scheduled to arrive in theatres on December 24. Its release will be closely followed by trade analysts and exhibitors, particularly because of the reported Rs 175 crore overseas minimum guarantee.
The film has already generated considerable attention through its casting and association with Shah Rukh Khan and Siddharth Anand. The overseas distribution deal adds another major talking point ahead of its release.
While the reported Rs 475 crore overseas target presents a significant commercial challenge, the actor’s international popularity could work in the film’s favour. Its eventual performance will depend on audience reception and how effectively it competes with other major releases.
For now, King has made headlines with a reported overseas distribution agreement that could set a new benchmark for Indian films. The box office figures after its December release will determine whether the confidence reflected in the deal translates into commercial success.
