Director S. Shankar’s Indian 2, starring Kamal Haasan, received lukewarm responses at the Indian box office, unlike its 1996 predecessor. Despite its ensemble cast featuring Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, Bobby Simha, SJ Suryah, and Priya Bhavani Shankar, the film failed to meet high expectations.

In an interview with Vikatan, Shankar expressed his disappointment but affirmed his focus on future projects, stating, “I didn’t expect such negative reviews for Indian 2. I have moved on and believe Game Changer and Indian 3 will offer memorable theatrical experiences.” Shankar confirmed Indian 3 will release exclusively in theaters, dispelling rumors of an OTT premiere.

Reports suggest that Indian 2 was split into two parts due to its extended runtime exceeding six hours. Part one, Indian 2: Zero Tolerance, was released in July 2024, while Indian 3: War Mode is planned for 2025. However, the production team is considering an OTT release for Indian 3 following Indian 2’s underwhelming performance to recover financial losses.

Indian 2 grossed ₹151 crore globally during its run, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024. It earned ₹65 crore on its opening day and ₹120 crore worldwide in its first week. A mid-credit teaser in Indian 2 offered audiences a glimpse of Indian 3, maintaining anticipation for the next installment.
