Diwali: The festival of lights

Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is one of India’s most widely celebrated festivals, observed by millions across the country and among Indian communities worldwide. Often referred to as the “festival of lights,” it symbolises the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.

The festival also commemorates Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana, as narrated in the Ramayana. Traditional customs during Diwali include cleaning and illuminating homes with oil lamps and lights, worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, exchanging sweets and gifts, wearing new clothes, and bursting firecrackers.

Celebrations in 2025

This year, Diwali will be celebrated on the night of October 20–21, with families across India preparing to mark the occasion with joy and devotion. Shilpa and Shamita’s rangoli video offers a glimpse of the personal celebrations of Bollywood celebrities, inspiring fans to embrace traditional festivities.
