Mumbai: Author and columnist Shobhaa De has made a striking revelation about Mumbai’s luxury dining scene, claiming that Shilpa Shetty’s upscale restaurant Bastian At The Top in Dadar earns between Rs 2 crore and Rs 3 crore every night.
During an appearance on the YouTube podcast Inside Out With Barkha Dutt, De shared her observations about the city’s booming nightlife and extravagant spending habits. She described Mumbai’s restaurant culture as “insane” and singled out Bastian as an example of its growing opulence.
“There is one single restaurant in Mumbai which has a turnover of Rs 2–3 crore a night. On slow nights, it’s Rs 2 crore and on weekends, Rs 3 crore or more,” De said, adding that she personally visited the venue to confirm the reports.
When asked to name the establishment, she responded, “It’s Bastian. It’s the new Bastian At The Top. It’s 21,000 square feet—you walk in there and feel, ‘Where am I?’ You have a 360° view of the city.”
A luxurious sky-high dining experience
Perched on the 48th floor of Kohinoor Square in Dadar, Bastian At The Top opened in 2023 and quickly became one of Mumbai’s most glamorous destinations. Known for its panoramic skyline views, rooftop pool, and lavish interiors, the restaurant combines fine dining with an exclusive nightlife atmosphere.
The venue attracts high-profile guests and socialites, offering an elaborate menu and curated cocktails. Its unique combination of fine dining and nightlife has made it one of the city’s busiest high-end spots.
Guests arrive in luxury cars, spend lakhs per table
According to De, the restaurant caters to around 1,400 diners every night across two dinner seatings. “They do two seatings, each of 700 people. There’s even a waiting list downstairs on the road in Dadar,” she said.
Describing the crowd, she added, “People arrive in Lamborghinis and Aston Martins. Who are these people? I have no idea.”
De also expressed her amazement at the spending scale. “I didn’t recognise a single face in all 700 diners. They were young, ordering bottles of the best tequila. Each table was spending lakhs—and yet they were complete strangers to me.”
Shilpa Shetty’s expanding food empire
Actress Shilpa Shetty entered the hospitality industry in 2019, partnering with restaurateur Ranjit Bindra, founder of the Bastian brand. Today, she reportedly holds a 50 percent stake in the chain, which has expanded to multiple locations across India.
Recently, Shetty inaugurated a new Bastian outlet in Goa, performing a traditional puja ceremony to mark its opening. Meanwhile, the popular Bandra outlet is set to close temporarily as the team transitions the space into a South Indian fine-dining restaurant named Ammakai.
Another venture, Bastian Beach Club, is expected to open soon in Juhu, further strengthening Shilpa’s footprint in the luxury hospitality space.
Industry experts say the success of Bastian mirrors Mumbai’s evolving luxury dining culture, where exclusivity, experience, and aesthetics drive demand as much as the food itself.
