Los Angeles: Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has made box-office history by overtaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing film of all time at the North American box office.

The Marvel-Sony blockbuster has collected USD 936.773 million domestically after 47 days in theatres, narrowly surpassing the USD 936.6 million earned by the 2015 Star Wars film. The figures are not adjusted for inflation.

The latest milestone adds another major achievement to the theatrical run of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which was released in North America on July 31, 2026.

Spider-Man takes the domestic box-office crown

Spider-Man: Brand New Day reached the record after continuing to attract audiences more than six weeks after its release.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film’s current domestic gross stands at USD 936,773,134, while its international earnings have reached around USD 1.52 billion, taking its worldwide total to approximately USD 2.45 billion.

That worldwide figure currently places the film among the biggest box-office successes in cinema history.

Its North American achievement is particularly significant because The Force Awakens had held the domestic record for more than a decade. The Star Wars sequel, released in 2015, benefited from enormous audience interest surrounding the return of the franchise to the big screen and remained at the top of the chart until September 2026.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now moved past it by a relatively narrow margin.

Top films at the North American box office

The latest figures put Spider-Man: Brand New Day at the top of the all-time North American box-office chart, followed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Avengers: Endgame remains among the leading titles with a domestic gross of approximately USD 858.3 million, while Holland’s previous solo Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, has earned around USD 814.8 million in North America.

James Cameron’s Avatar also remains among the biggest domestic earners, with approximately USD 785.2 million.

The new record is notable for Holland’s Spider-Man franchise in particular. No Way Home had already delivered one of the strongest theatrical runs of the pandemic era, and Brand New Day has now taken the franchise’s domestic performance to another level.

Lucasfilm congratulates Spider-Man

The record also prompted a playful response from the franchise that previously held the North American crown.

Lucasfilm congratulated the Spider-Man: Brand New Day team through its official social media channels after the Marvel-Sony film overtook The Force Awakens.

The message opened with the familiar Star Wars phrase, “Impressive. Most Impressive,” before congratulating director Destin Daniel Cretton, Tom Holland, Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios and the wider team behind the film.

Lucasfilm also referenced the fact that the new Spider-Man film had taken the domestic record from The Force Awakens, making the exchange a notable moment between two major Hollywood franchises.

The Star Wars social media account accompanied the message with an image celebrating Spider-Man’s achievement.

Brand New Day continues a remarkable run

The domestic record is only the latest in a series of milestones for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The film has also performed strongly internationally. Box Office Mojo currently lists its worldwide gross at approximately USD 2.45 billion, with international markets accounting for more than USD 1.5 billion of that total.

The film’s success has also contributed significantly to a strong summer box-office period. Reports on the 2026 theatrical season have highlighted Spider-Man: Brand New Day alongside Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey as major contributors to the year’s global cinema performance.

The film has also been one of the fastest releases to cross several major domestic box-office milestones, reaching the USD 400 million through USD 900 million marks at a rapid pace.

Could Spider-Man cross USD 1 billion domestically?

With the North American record now secured, attention is turning towards another potentially historic milestone: whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day can cross USD 1 billion domestically.

The film still has a significant gap to close, with its current domestic total at about USD 936.8 million. Whether it reaches the landmark will depend on how much longer the film remains in theatres and how its daily earnings hold up during the later stages of its theatrical run.

At this stage, a USD 1 billion North American total remains a possibility rather than a confirmed outcome.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker.
