Red Chillies VFX recently released an extensive breakdown reel showcasing the visual effects work done for the movie Dunki, which stars Shah Rukh Khan and is directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The four-minute video provided insight into the intricate visual effects that contributed to the immersive experience of Dunki. Despite receiving mixed reviews, Dunki achieved significant success at the box office. The breakdown reel highlighted several key scenes from the film and emphasized the extensive visual effects involved in their creation. For instance, in the final sequence where Taapsee Pannu’s character walks through her village reminiscing about her youth, meticulous VFX work was required to achieve a seamless camera movement.

Furthermore, the scene where Vicky Kaushal’s character finds himself engulfed in flames following a failed visa interview relied on computer-generated fire for enhancement. Throughout the film, digitally-rendered environments enriched the cinematic journey, while scenes involving vehicles were shot against blue screen backdrops, with Red Chillies VFX creating the surrounding landscapes.

Additionally, the breakdown video revealed interesting details, such as Shah Rukh Khan not actually being submerged underwater during a crucial scene, leading to CGI manipulation to simulate wet hair. Similarly, the effect of wrinkly feet in a close-up shot was achieved through visual effects rather than practical immersion in water.

The film’s visual effects received acclaim from fans, with one YouTube commenter praising the water scene as “impeccable” and “exceptional work.” Despite facing mixed reviews from critics, Dunki emerged as the third-highest-grossing film of Shah Rukh Khan’s career, earning over ₹470 crore worldwide against its ₹120 crore budget. The year 2023 marked a peak in Shah Rukh Khan’s career, with his other releases, Pathaan and Jawan, each surpassing ₹1000 crore in global earnings.
