Bengaluru: The wait is finally over for fans of the Kannada blockbuster Su From So. The comedy, directed by JP Thuminad and produced by actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty, will begin streaming on JioHotstar from September 9, marking the film’s OTT debut after a highly successful theatrical run. The confirmation makes Su From So the first Kannada film to arrive on the platform since the JioCinema–Hotstar merger.
From box office glory to OTT screens
Released in July, Su From So has turned out to be the highest-grossing Kannada film of 2025 so far. Made on a modest budget of around ₹4.5 crore with an additional ₹1–1.5 crore spent on promotions, the film has amassed an impressive ₹121 crore worldwide within six weeks of its release.
While Karnataka accounted for the lion’s share of the earnings, the Malayalam dubbed version contributed ₹6–7 crore from Kerala. A Telugu version also hit theatres but did not find as much favour with audiences, despite encouraging reviews.
About the film
Su From So follows the story of Prakasha, played by JP Thuminad, who claims to be possessed, leading to a series of comedic events. The title itself is derived from Sulochana from Someshwar—the supposed spirit in the film—shortened by the director for a catchier name.
The film features an ensemble cast including Shaneel Gautham, Sandhya Arekere, Raj B Shetty, Mime Ramadas, Deepak Rai Panaje, Prakash Thuminad, and Pushparaj Bolar.
Industry significance
The arrival of Su From So on JioHotstar is being seen as a breakthrough for Kannada cinema in the OTT space. For months, Kannada filmmakers had expressed concern about the lack of representation of Sandalwood films on major platforms. The film’s acquisition by JioHotstar is now being welcomed as a positive sign for the industry.
However, industry insiders remain watchful to see what criteria the platform applies in selecting Kannada films going forward.
Continuing success story
Even as the OTT release date has been locked, Su From So continues to run in select theatres across Karnataka, with several fast-filling shows in its seventh week. The film’s transition to streaming is expected to give it a fresh wave of audience appreciation beyond the state and language boundaries.
