Mumbai: Mandhira Kapur Smith, sister of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, has opened up about her brother’s third wife Priya Sachdev and his ex-wife Karisma Kapoor, accusing Priya of interfering in Sunjay and Karisma’s marriage. Speaking to Vicky Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Mandhira alleged that Priya’s involvement disrupted a marriage that was still being nurtured, even after the couple had children.
Mandhira Kapur on Karisma Kapoor
Mandhira emphasised that Karisma Kapoor, referred to as Lolo, had worked hard to maintain her marriage with Sunjay Kapur. She said:
“For another woman to not care about a woman who’s just had a child is in bad taste. To come and disrupt the family is in bad taste…You don’t break up a happy marriage. Lolo did not deserve that. She was working hard to make this marriage work.”
The couple, married in 2003, had two children: Samaira (born 2005) and Kiaan (born 2011). Karisma and Sunjay filed for divorce in 2014, and it was finalised in 2016. Sunjay subsequently married Priya Sachdev in 2017, and the couple welcomed a son, Azarias.
Family opposition to Sunjay and Priya’s relationship
Mandhira revealed that the Kapur family, particularly their late father Surinder Kapur, opposed Sunjay’s relationship with Priya. She recalled a conversation with her family in Goa, stating:
“Dad was totally against Priya. He said, ‘He can never marry her. I don’t ever want to see her face. And they can’t have children.’ Nobody in this family stood by them getting married. Lolo had the children; she had everything. They should have made it work.”
She also noted that, apart from their mother Rani Kapur, most family members did not attend Sunjay and Priya’s wedding in New York in 2017.
Sunjay Kapur’s passing and legacy
Sunjay Kapur, chairman of Sona Comstar, passed away on June 12 while playing polo in London, United Kingdom, reportedly due to a heart attack. His final rites were performed on June 19 at Lodhi Road Cremation Ground, South Delhi.
Legal battle over Sunjay Kapur’s estate
Following Sunjay’s death, a legal dispute has arisen over his estate. In August, Priya Sachdev submitted a document claiming to be Sunjay’s will to the Delhi High Court. This claim has been challenged by Karisma Kapoor’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, along with Rani Kapur. Reports suggest Sunjay’s assets may be worth ₹30,000 crore, though his children have stated they were unaware of the exact valuation. On September 10, the court instructed Priya to submit a detailed list of his assets.
Conclusion
Mandhira Kapur Smith’s comments have intensified public attention on the complex family dynamics and legal battles surrounding Sunjay Kapur’s legacy. While Karisma Kapoor and Priya Sachdev remain central figures in the ongoing discussions, the dispute over the estate continues to unfold in court, with the family’s history and internal disagreements under scrutiny.
