Netflix, the most popular OTT platform drops down to number two position in number of total subscriptions. Disney+ is on top of the list after the end of June quarter with 221 million streaming subscribers.
The internet advancements and low data costs are one of the reasons for the growth of online video viewing and after the pandemic the numbers kept going high. People shifted from the traditional content consumption methods to OTT and online viewing.
Netflix was on the top list for a quite long period now and there was no competition to it initially. After 2016 many OTT platforms started producing new contents across genres and local languages and the market also was shared by others. Pandemic gradually fluctuated the subscription rate of Netflix because people preferred other platforms in mixed numbers.
Netflix used many tactics to grow the numbers by reducing the rates of subscription in India. Disney+ combined with Hulu and ESPN+ had 221.1 million streaming subscribers at the end of the June quarter meanwhile Netflix said it had 220.7 million streaming subscribers.
Disney+ said that they’ll increase subscription charges for no-advertisements and existing priced plans will be active with advertisements starting December.
