Veteran Kannada actor and director Upendra Rao is relishing the success of his latest film, UI, which has received praise for its innovative approach. In a recent interview with India Today, the actor discussed the rise of Kannada cinema and his plans to remake his 1999 cult film Upendra in Hindi.
He spoke about the evolution of the Kannada film industry, noting how technology and the growing trend of pan-Indian films have transformed filmmaking. Upendra mentioned the shift from low-budget, quick productions—where music videos were filmed in just a matter of days—to high-budget projects now embracing advanced VFX and modern technical advancements.
The actor also appreciated the concept of pan-Indian cinema, which enables films to break linguistic barriers, reaching a broader audience. He emphasized that this approach allows filmmakers to produce multiple versions of a film simultaneously, broadening its appeal. He acknowledged the challenge and excitement that comes with this new filmmaking approach.
Upendra expressed great pride in the national recognition Kannada cinema has gained. He pointed out that Kannada films are drawing larger crowds today. Reflecting on his past Bollywood project with Amitabh Bachchan’s production house, he admitted that due to his packed schedule with Kannada and Telugu films, he had to prioritize one language at a time.
When asked about which film he would like to adapt for Hindi, Upendra confidently chose Upendra, believing the themes and futuristic concepts still resonate with audiences today.
