Actor Urvashi Dholakia has spoken candidly about her journey of raising twin sons as a single mother, sharing the emotional challenges she faced and the important role her mother played in shaping their upbringing.

In a recent interaction with Hauterrfly, the actress revealed that the decision to send her sons to boarding school was taken by her mother rather than herself.

Emotional decision to send sons to boarding school

Dholakia said she initially found the decision extremely difficult, as it meant living away from her children.

“It was difficult. I had to send them to boarding school. It was my mother’s decision, not mine,” the actress said.

According to Dholakia, her mother believed that a boarding school environment would provide discipline and stability for the children.

“She told me that instead of keeping them with me and giving them an undisciplined life, put them in a hostel to give them a disciplined life,” she recalled.

Her mother also pointed out that Dholakia’s demanding career would make it difficult for her to spend enough time with the children.

“She said, ‘You will never be able to give them time, and they will get indisciplined. How long can the grandparents do it? Because they are also ageing,’” the actor shared.

Coping with separation

The actress admitted that the separation was emotionally painful.

“I used to feel so bad that we were getting separated. I used to cry every day of my life. The kids were not home,” she said.

However, she later realised that her busy work schedule meant she herself was rarely at home.

Over time, Dholakia came to believe that her mother’s decision had ultimately benefited her sons.

Sons grew up disciplined and independent

Speaking about her children today, Dholakia said they have grown into disciplined and responsible individuals.

“My mother’s decision was absolutely bang on. My sons are disciplined. One of my sons cooks, and the other makes tea for me and does all the household chores,” she said.

The actress also shared that her sons grew up largely surrounded by women, which shaped their understanding of life and responsibilities.

“They have only grown up with women. They have seen it all. They know what it is to live with women. They have seen the hardships,” she said.
