Legendary Bollywood actor Dharmendra, aged 89, has been placed on ventilator support at Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai, after being admitted over a week ago following complaints of breathlessness, sources close to the family told NDTV.
The veteran star, who will turn 90 on December 8, 2025, is under close medical supervision. In April 2025, Dharmendra underwent an eye graft surgery, after which he had reportedly been recovering well until his recent health setback.
Hospital authorities have not issued an official statement yet, but family sources indicated that doctors are monitoring his condition round the clock.
A career spanning over six decades
Dharmendra, born Dharam Singh Deol, made his debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. During the 1960s, he earned acclaim for portraying the everyman in films such as Anpadh, Bandini, Anupama, and Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke.
He later transitioned into playing heroic and versatile roles in iconic hits like Sholay, Dharam Veer, Chupke Chupke, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, and Dream Girl. Known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, Dharmendra remains one of Bollywood’s most beloved and respected actors.
Recent projects
Dharmendra was last seen in the 2024 romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. His next appearance will be in Ikkis, featuring Agastya Nanda, grandson of Amitabh Bachchan, which is scheduled for release on December 25, 2025.

As news of his hospitalisation spread, several celebrities and fans took to social media to express concern and send wishes for his speedy recovery. The actor, revered for his humility and warmth, continues to command immense affection across generations.
Family members, including his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, are reported to be by his side. The hospital is expected to release an official health bulletin soon.
