Several women in the Malayalam film industry are now coming forward to share their traumatic experiences, highlighting a deeply entrenched culture of harassment and inequality. They accuse the industry of being a “boys’ club” where abuse of women is normalized and covered up by powerful groups.
Actress-producer Sandra Thomas detailed her own experiences of humiliation and discrimination within the industry, including being mocked during a Producers’ Association meeting after filing a complaint about unethical practices. Her letter to the association, which calls for better working conditions and safer environments for women, underscores the lack of action from film organizations despite the revelations of the Hema Committee Report.
Renowned actress Shwetha Menon has voiced her support for these women, emphasizing the need for strengthened laws and systemic change to protect against further abuse. She sees the current movement as a promising start toward justice and reform.
