In a powerful tribute to one of India’s most pivotal legal battles, Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi have completed shooting for their upcoming film based on the historic 1985 Shah Bano vs Ahmed Khan case. The announcement comes on the 40th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court judgment, which reshaped the discourse around Muslim women’s rights in India.

Directed by Suparn S Verma (Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hain), the film will explore the emotionally charged and socially significant story of Shah Bano, a woman who dared to challenge patriarchal norms wrapped in religious doctrine. Yami Gautam portrays the protagonist, drawing inspiration from Shah Bano herself, while Emraan Hashmi plays her husband, echoing the character of Ahmed Khan—a man whose refusal to support his wife post-divorce led to a courtroom battle that would go down in history.

Shah Bano’s real-life legal struggle highlighted the conflict between personal law and constitutional rights, stirring national debate and influencing reforms. Despite facing financial constraints and deep societal pressure, she fought to assert her dignity and rights in a male-dominated legal framework.

The film has been shot across various locations in Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, and is expected to hit theatres in October or November 2025.

This cinematic retelling hopes to ignite conversations around justice, gender equality, and the continued relevance of the Shah Bano verdict in modern India.
