Book release: ‘Huli Vesha’ unveiled at St Aloysius College

Mangaluru: St Aloysius Prakashana, the esteemed publishing unit of St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore, released the book titled ‘Huli Vesha’ written by Dr Chandra Shekhara Shetty. This insightful work delves into the origin and performance of a unique dance form indigenous to the coastal Karnataka region, known as ‘Tiger Dance’ or ‘Pili Yesha’ in the local Tulu language.

The book release ceremony took place on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at the Sahodaya Hall on the College campus. Dr N Damaodara Shetty, a distinguished writer and former Professor of Kannada at St Aloysius College (Autonomous), unveiled the book. He said the need and importance of preserving such art forms through serious works like this book. Dr B. Shivarama Shetty, formerly Professor of Kannada at Mangalore University, spoke about the content of the book. He pointed out the various topics the author has dealt with in the book.

Rev. Fr Melvin Joseph Pinto SJ, Rector of St Aloysius College Institutions in his presidential remark reminisced about the performances that everybody might have witnessed in earlier days. Rev Dr Praveen Martis SJ, the Principal of St Aloysius College, congratulated the Author and also said that this is an opportunity to all staff to continue the tradition of writing in the college.

A senior Pili Vesha artist Kadri Gangadhara Devadiga, Santhu (Tase artist), Ramesh (Dolu artist), and Md.  Asif (the one who supports Pili Vesha artists) were felicitated during the occasion. Dr Chandra Shekhara Shetty welcomed the gathering.

Dr Vidya Vinutha DSouza, the Director of St Aloysius Prakashana thanked the gathering.
