Mangaluru: The Father Muller Research Centre of the Father Muller Charitable Institutions hosted intellectuals in the field of biomedical engineering on 18th January 2020. Father Muller Research Centre, Mangalore in collaboration with Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore conducted a workshop on Point of Care Biomedical Technologies: Demonstration and Feasibility Study for indigenous Development of Biomedical Devices.

The resource persons were from the varied field of engineering with a keen interest in bio-medical devices to help a man in his sickness and health. Their CVs boasts of unparalleled intellect but were of humble in character and every so engaging in attitude. The team comprised scientists from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and National Institute of Technology, Mangalore.
The eminent scientists were; Dr. Veluri Sudhakar, scientist Engineer, Aeronautical Development Agency, Bangalore Nodal Agency under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. His main responsibility is the development of the Advance Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) for the Light Combat Aircraft – Tejas and the Integrated Vehicle Health Monitoring (IVHM) for AMCA.

Prof. N S Dinesh, Professor in Department of Electronics Systems Engineering (DESE) Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore having areas of expertise in Mechatronics, Telematics, Power Electronics, Sensors and Actuators, and Biomedical Engineering.

Prof. M M Nayak, Professor in the Center for Nanoscience Engineering Department, IISc Bangalore. His research area is into a micro and nanoelectromechanical system and sensors. He has developed neuro-muscular electrical stimulation devices and many medical devices and has many patents through ISRO. Having also held the post of Director, Launch Vehicle Programme Office, ISRO.
Prof. Gangadharan K V, Head, Center for System Design and Chairman, Central Research Facility (HEFA), Center for System Design. Prof. of NITK in Mechanical Engineering with over 100 publications to his credit.

Dr. Sanjeev Rai, Chief of Research who was formerly the Dean of Father Muller Medical College brought together these eminent scientists in the view of developing partnerships in research between the medical and engineering field.

Rev Fr Ajith B. Menezes, Administrator of Father Muller Medical College welcomed the scientist and briefed them about the history of the institutions and the future in which the institutions are running. The forenoon session was an interactive session with the heads of departments of the FMMC and the administration with the scientists, followed by a tour of the campus. The post noon session saw lectures by the stalwarts with presentations and demonstrations. The talks were followed by the demonstration of biomedical devices that have been patented and are into field trials.

The uniqueness of this interactive session was the bringing together of people of different language codes and trying to match their frequency through collaborative efforts. Medicine and mechanics have grown apart but collaborations have led to a better quality of life in people. Be it an MRI or ultrasound machine, be it a fully automated hemo-analyzer all are engineering technologies used in enhancing the quality of life of the living.

The Father Muller Charitable Institution’s many sister concerns are at the forefront of research and innovations. Be it academic and research activities, the students and faculty are motivated to hone new skills. The Director FMCI, Rev Fr Richard A. Coelho, gives a push to such activities for the progress of the humankind and the nation itself.

The fond hope is that this collaborative venture bears fruit and many new innovative technologies are born.
