Folk Culture Is the Vehicle of Oral Tradition: Prof P L Dharma

Mangalore:  Konkani Adhyayana Peeta Mangalore University in collaboration with Milagres College, Mangalore organised One day National Conference on “Konkani Folklore and Future” on 26 March, 2024 at 9.30 am in the college auditorium.

The Chief Guest Prof P L Dharma, Honourable Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University inaugurated and of the Program. while addressing the audience he said encouraging folk culture should begin from home.

Folk traditions like using turmeric and rose milk which were being followed in the past years had scientific benefits. But the present generation has given up those practices resulting in many skin diseases.

He also suggested that students take up minor projects like collecting and analysing folk stories, folk traditional items and instruments consulting their elderly community people.

Dr Jayavantha Nayak, Co-ordinator, Konkani Adhyayana Peeta, Mangalore University gave an introduction to the seminar and explained how Mangalore University Konkani Adhyayana Peeta is promoting Konkani language, culture, folklore and research.

Rev. Fr Bonaventure Nazareth, Correspondent, Milagres College Presided over the program. He appreciated the support that the university renders in promoting education and congratulated the Vice Chancellor.

Rev. Fr Micheal Santhumayor, Principal and Campus Director of Milagres College welcomed the gathering.

On behalf of the Milagres College management Prof P L Dharma, the new vice chancellor was felicitated.

Wilson Pinto, a Konkani folk activist in Mumbai was the resource person for the program.

Rev Dr Leo Lasrado, designated Secretary, Catholic Board of Education, Mangalore, Tressy Pinto Co-ordinator, Konkani, Milagres College and Anson Pinto student representatives were on the dais.

Irine Rebello conducted Technical Session 1 on the topic of Konkani Christian Folklore and future. Bindumadhava Shenoy led Session 2 on Konkani GSB Folklore and Future. Dr Roshan Pinto, Principal of Alvas Homoeopathic Medical College, Mudbiri, served as the panellist for the program.

At 1.30 pm the valedictory of the program was held.

Sharvya N, Faculty compered the program and Tressy Pinto gave the vote of thanks.
